  • What is the standard exterior door size?

    96 inches or 8 ft. is now very common for newer homes and stock exterior doors are also commonly available in 30 and 32-inch widths. Some door manufacturers sell doors in 7ft & 8ft heights and door widths from 24 inches to 42 inches. The height for fiberglass or steel doors are fixed at 6 ft.

  • How do you measure the size of a door?

    Take three measurements inside the door frame – at the top, middle and bottom. The widest measurement determines the width of the door. Use a tape measure to understand the width of the three areas of the door frame. Run the tape measure along the width of the frame from the left to the right and record these numbers.

  • How to replace an exterior door?

    Unfortunately, it's not that easy; replacing an exterior door requires exact measuring, medium-to-advanced carpentry skills, and an understanding of terms and materials.

  • How do you paint an exterior door?

    Painting Tips


    • Painting a door is a race against time.
    • Consider a paint additive to slow down drying and improve leveling.
    • Start with a dust-free door; wipe it down with a damp rag just before painting.
    • Don't use cheap roller sleeves or you'll get fibers in the finish.
    • Paint all four edges of the door first.

    You can paint both sides of the hardware within seconds and save a ton of time. One word of caution, when spray painting deadbolts or door handles use very light coats of paint.
